Notwithstanding the broadly worded definition of unfair competition, the law was not relied on as the basis of general consumer protection actions until the late 1950's. Even then, however, the law was relied on principally by public prosecutors until Barquis v. Merchants Collection Assn. (1972) 7 Cal.3d 94,101 Cal.Rptr. 745, 496 P.2d 817, a case brought by private plaintiffs, confirmed the breadth of the definition of unfair competition and the availability of the action for injunctive relief to private plaintiffs.
