614 S.W.2d 323, 324 (Mo.App.1981). The appellate court only determines whether there was substantial evidence to support the verdict. If there is substantial evidence to support the verdict, the trial court did not abuse its discretion in refusing the motion for a new trial. In determining adequacy of damages, there is substantial evidence to support the verdict where the award is responsive to the proof. Id.
